Transforming Palm Oil Waste into Valuable Resources

Innovative Palm Oil Recovery Solutions | Sustainable Technology | Industrial Efficiency

At Biotropic MSIA, we believe that industrial wastewater can represent an opportunity for resource recovery. Our focus is on innovative solutions that help palm oil mills recover residual crude palm oil from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), improve operational efficiency, and support more sustainable resource management.

By combining oil recovery technology, automated processing, and practical industrial solutions, we aim to help palm oil producers unlock additional value from existing operations while improving wastewater treatment performance.

About Us

Driving Innovation in Palm Oil Waste Recovery

Biotropic MSIA focuses on opportunities at the intersection of palm oil processing, resource recovery, and environmental sustainability.

Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) is generated during the extraction of crude palm oil from fresh fruit bunches. Although commonly treated as wastewater, POME can contain residual oil that may be recovered through appropriate processing technology.

Our approach focuses on helping palm oil mills identify this hidden value through practical recovery solutions designed around their operating capacity, wastewater characteristics, and commercial objectives.

We aim to support a palm oil industry that makes better use of available resources, reduces avoidable losses, and continually improves its environmental performance.

Our Technology

POME Oil Recovery System (PORS)

The POME Oil Recovery System (PORS) is designed to recover residual oil from palm oil mill effluent through a combination of conditioning, chemical demulsification, and mechanical separation.

The system integrates three principal components:

1. Demulsification System

Conditions the wastewater to help release oil trapped within stable emulsions, making it more suitable for subsequent separation.

2. Chemical Dosing System

Applies specialised demulsifier agents at controlled dosages according to POME characteristics and processing requirements.

3. Three-Phase Oil Extraction System

Separates the conditioned material into recovered oil, water, and solids using automated separation equipment.

The resulting process is designed to recover valuable oil while reducing the oil load entering downstream wastewater treatment.

Designed for Industrial Applications

PORS can be configured for palm oil mills processing approximately 100–1,500 metric tonnes of POME per day, subject to site assessment and engineering requirements.

The system is intended to support continuous operation with automated controls and reduced manual intervention.

Key Benefits

Recover More Value

Recover residual crude palm oil that might otherwise remain in wastewater, creating a potential additional revenue stream for palm oil mills.

Improve Mill Efficiency

Oil recovery may contribute to improved overall oil extraction performance. Actual results depend on the mill’s baseline performance, POME characteristics, and operating conditions.

Enhance Wastewater Treatment

Reducing the oil content entering downstream treatment processes can help improve treatment efficiency and support wastewater management objectives.

Make Better Use of Resources

Separated solids may offer opportunities for further utilisation, including potential organic fertiliser or animal feed applications, subject to their quality, safety, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Automation and Operational Reliability

Integrated dosing, conditioning, and separation equipment can support consistent processing with reduced manual intervention.

Scalable Industrial Design

System capacity and configuration can be tailored to the operating requirements of small, medium, and large palm oil mills.

A Commercial Model Designed for Palm Oil Mills

Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT)

Where offered and contractually agreed, a Build, Own, Operate and Transfer arrangement can provide an alternative to direct capital investment by the mill owner.

Under the proposed model:

Build: The technology provider designs and installs the recovery system.

Own: The provider retains ownership of the equipment during the agreed contract period.

Operate: The provider manages system operation and maintenance in accordance with the contract.

Transfer: Ownership may be transferred to the mill owner at the end of the agreed term or through an agreed early-buyout arrangement.

This structure can help eligible palm oil mills explore oil recovery opportunities without bearing the full upfront equipment investment.

Commercial terms, recovered-oil revenue sharing, operating responsibilities, performance guarantees, and transfer conditions are subject to a mutually agreed contract.

Unlocking the Economic Potential of POME

Residual oil recovery can represent a significant commercial opportunity, depending on the quantity and quality of POME generated by each mill.

The financial potential of a recovery project depends on factors such as:

  • Daily fresh fruit bunch processing capacity.
  • POME volume and residual oil concentration.
  • Actual recovery efficiency.
  • Crude palm oil selling price.
  • Chemical, utility, and operating requirements.
  • Revenue-sharing arrangements and project financing.

A site-specific assessment can help estimate recoverable oil volumes, potential revenue, technical suitability, and the commercial feasibility of a proposed installation.

Our objective is to help turn measurable recovery potential into a practical industrial opportunity.

Our Implementation Approach

Step 1: Initial Consultation

Understand the mill’s processing capacity, existing wastewater treatment arrangements, and oil recovery objectives.

Step 2: Site Assessment

Evaluate POME volume, oil content, wastewater characteristics, available space, utilities, and infrastructure compatibility.

Step 3: Engineering and Design

Develop a proposed system configuration based on the assessment findings and operational requirements.

Step 4: Installation and Commissioning

Coordinate equipment installation, system integration, testing, and performance verification according to the agreed project scope.

Step 5: Operations and Performance Review

Monitor operating performance, oil recovery, system availability, and relevant wastewater parameters against agreed targets.

Each project is subject to technical evaluation, site conditions, and contractual agreement.

Sustainability Through Resource Recovery

Sustainable industrial development requires more than treating waste. It also involves identifying opportunities to recover resources, improve efficiency, and reduce avoidable losses.

By focusing on residual oil recovery from POME, Biotropic MSIA supports an approach that seeks to combine commercial value creation with improved wastewater management.

We believe practical industrial innovation can contribute to a more resource-efficient palm oil sector.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is POME?

Palm Oil Mill Effluent is wastewater generated during the processing of fresh fruit bunches to produce crude palm oil.

What is PORS?

PORS stands for POME Oil Recovery System. It uses conditioning, chemical demulsification, and mechanical separation to recover residual oil from POME.

How much oil can the system recover?

Recovery depends on the oil concentration in the POME, processing conditions, equipment configuration, and operating efficiency. The project should be assessed using actual mill data.

Which palm oil mills are suitable?

The proposed technology can be configured for different mill sizes. Suitability must be confirmed through a site-specific technical assessment.

Does the mill need to purchase the equipment upfront?

Under an agreed BOOT arrangement, the technology provider may finance, own, and operate the system during the contract period. Availability and terms must be confirmed for each project.
